Which makes the best ground cloth or tent footprint - 1016 or 1443r?
1016 is much less expensive and more than adequate for ground cloth. It softens quickly with use. We can cut type 1016 to your specifications. This is what most backpackers use due to its low cost and strength.

1443r is indeed very light weight and also softer right off the roll. It is sold by the linear foot, 60inches wide. We do not cut to spec 1443r. It makes a fine ground cloth if you want the lightest material available.
More about Tent Footprints
Tyvek 1016 or 1443r makes excellent material for tent footprints. It is an extremely tough, puncture and tear resistant, breathable, air-permeable material. This makes Tyvek ideal for protecting your tent floor from rock punctures and dirt.

Why is Tyvek in fact the IDEAL material for use as a ground cloth?
The answer is simple: Let's suppose you put down a perfectly waterproof ground cloth (like a plastic sheet) and then pitch your leaky-bottom tent over it. You fill your tent with highly absorbent materials (like your sleeping bag). In the event of rain, water will become trapped ABOVE the plastic sheet, pass THROUGH the leaky tent bottom, and be ABSORBED by your sleeping bag!

What you need is a permeable ground cloth and a waterproof tent bottom. Now rain will be absorbed by the GROUND and will NOT collect ABOVE the ground cloth. It will NOT pass through the water proof tent bottom and NOT absorb into your sleeping bag - PERFECT!

Use the Tyvek ground cloth to protect your waterproof tent bottom from dirt and punctures. Treat your tent bottom with a spray-on or brush-on waterproofing sealer and treat all seams with a seam sealer. These products are available where ever camping supplies are sold.

If your tent is not rectangular, order a piece larger than you need, pitch your tent over it, and trim it to fit your tent with a pair of scissors. My current inventory consists of a roll 10 feet wide, so I can accommodate almost any tent without any seams!

TIP!  1016 and 1443r are water repellent NOT water proof and not a substitute for a water proof tent bottom.

Treat your tent bottom with a spray or brush-on waterproofing sealer and treat all seams with a seam sealer. These products are available where ever camping supplies are sold.
